SOBUKWE - a great soul

Sobukwe  A GREAT SOUL  - Amnesty International Award for Human Rights

Durban International Film Festival 2011

SOBUKWE - A GREAT SOUL is the story of a giant, an unusually extraordinary human being, a global visionary, teacher, political leader of note, a philosopher, spiritualist, Humanist Par Excellence. Yet this man, Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, the man whose voice once inspired and liberated a nation, has been silenced. There is not a single piece of archive, not even a single surviving audio recording of a man who was once one of the most watched, most recorded, most popular political prisoner in the world in his time, well ahead of his time in his use of the word “non-racial” in a racist world, who confounded all when he asserted, “There is only one race, the human race”.

This drama-doc, rather than the typical docudrama genre, explores the life of this man and attempts to answer why he has been silenced, “forgotten”. This is a figure who became an international icon, whose passing led to a special session at the UN, once the most popular political prisoner in the world - prisoner #1 on Robben Island, the only man kept in solitary confinement for six solid years (So scared was the apartheid government of Sobukwe that they not only kept him away from other prisoners on Robben Island, but they also created a law solely for him, called The Sobukwe Clause), who stands head and shoulders above the few individuals who changed the shape of South Africa and the world – Nelson Mandela, Steve Biko, Martin Luther King, Che Guevarra, Nehru, Malcolm X, Kwame Nkruman? etc, the world has forgotten about him; not even the current South African government recognizes him (there isn’t even a street named after him). Why has Sobukwe been silenced?

This film seeks to restore the VOICE of Sobukwe, which is more relevant today than ever before in its embodiment of great qualities and lessons in integrity, courage, honesty, humanity, selflessness, total sacrifice, total commitment, moral uprightness, fearlessness, true leadership, his deep sense of forgiving and humility. For him, human’s came first, irrespective of their origins, hence his continual self-sacrifice for the well-being of others.

This film, SOBUKWE – A GREAT SOUL, intends to put on the world map the name and contributions of Mangaliso Robert Sobukwe. We will see how humanity lost a GREAT SOUL in Sobukwe.
